umataluIn 1984, at the height of the Maxi frenzy, some of the world’s best-known naval architects were asked to come up with the proposal for an 80 foot sloop, that would combine excellent racing performance under the International Offshore Rule with luxurious long range cruising capabilities. Among the different proposals, it was the work of French architect Andre Mauric which emerged in terms of originality and innovation. Mauric at that time had been working very closely with Eric Tabarly in developing the famed around-the-world racer Pen Duick, and his design for Umatalu would ultimately produce one of the most original and innovative yachts of its time.
